The tragic loss of life from the recent severe storms in Texas is a sober reminder of the vital role accurate weather forecasting plays in protecting public safety. It is deeply concerning that officials are citing failures by the National Weather Service to accurately predict the intensity of the rainfall and flooding as a key factor in the inadequate preparedness and response. Previously warned cuts to the NWS and NOAA's staffing and resources appear to have compromised their forecasting capabilities with deadly consequences. The dangerous "DOGE" cuts to these vital programs must be restored to prevent further tragedies. This disaster underscores the importance of robust funding and support for our nation's weather monitoring and prediction capabilities. Responsible governance demands we learn from this tragedy and take decisive action to ensure the NWS has the resources it needs to fulfill its life-saving mission. We cannot afford to have cost-cutting undermine the very agencies entrusted with safeguarding American communities from severe weather emergencies.
