Habeus Corpus

To: Rep. Lawler

From: A verified voter in Nanuet, NY

May 10

When I was eighteen years old, I voted for George W. Bush. My father chaired our county’s republican committee. I believed in small government, one that doesn’t interfere with your life. Fiscal responsibility. The party I voted for decades ago is not the Republican Party of today. Were you a republican back then? Surely you’re seeing it too. Being truthful, I didn’t vote for you. We are ideologically quite different. But surely the announcement today that the administration is looking into suspending habeus corpus must have chilled you, too. I miss the old republicans, the ones who believed putting country over party was part of the job. We’ve never needed people like that more. I hold hope that there are still enough things we have in common that you and I both feel chilled by that kind of talk. Maybe I’m wrong. I hope I’m not. Please, represent us. Represent our rights.
