I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed construction of additional border wall infrastructure within or adjacent to Big Bend National Park. Big Bend National Park is one of the most ecologically significant and culturally important landscapes in the United States. The park protects a remarkable diversity of wildlife, including species that depend on the ability to move freely across the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem. Construction of a border wall would fragment habitat, disrupt wildlife migration, and reduce ecological connectivity that is essential for the long-term health of many native species. In addition to its environmental value, Big Bend offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience expansive natural landscapes, dark skies, wilderness, and the Rio Grande corridor. Permanent border wall infrastructure, along with associated roads, lighting, and maintenance activities, would alter the character of the park and diminish the visitor experience that Congress intended to preserve. The Big Bend region also contains significant archaeological, historical, and cultural resources. Any construction project should carefully consider the potential impacts on these irreplaceable resources and on the communities and Tribes with longstanding connections to the area. I urge the responsible agencies to fully evaluate the environmental, cultural, and recreational consequences of this proposal through a transparent, science-based review process. Alternatives that achieve border security objectives while minimizing harm to protected public lands, wildlife, and cultural resources should be prioritized. For these reasons, I respectfully request that the proposed border wall construction affecting Big Bend National Park not move forward.
