These tariffs need to stop, and they need to stop now. The 90 day tariff pause just announced is good, but we can’t just keep mistreating our allies and good friends.
Putting a reasonable tariff on China is one thing, but putting a tariff on countries that we have a trade surplus with seems very wrong (New Zealand for example). The excessive tariff on Vietnam makes no sense either. Long ago, the American textile industry shut down. Those factories are long gone. Now, workers in countries like Vietnam do jobs for far less pay than any American would, and that’s why we have cheap prices at Walmart (and the like). You want to bring that industry back to the US? Who will work those jobs? Who will build the plants? Vietnamese workers make $200-$300 a month doing those jobs. There is no way American workers can approach that. There are many similar examples in other countries.
Also, there is no way that a country like Vietnam could ever import enough from America to balance the trade deficit with them. Not possible.
These tariffs are a tax on the American people. Tell the truth! Explain that it will primarily be the American consumers that will bear the burden of these tariffs. The “billions flowing into the US Treasury” are coming directly out of the pockets of hard-working Americans. Explain that - the truth - to your supporters. Stop lying about who pays the tariffs!
