I am deeply disturbed by the recent nomination of Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. It is incredibly difficult to understand how someone who has, time and time again, undermined our country’s international standing could be considered for such an honor. Trump’s actions, particularly in relation to Russia, have been alarming. His administration's dealings with Russia raised serious questions about his loyalty to the United States and its allies. Further, his disregard for the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which promised security assurances to Ukraine in exchange for giving up its nuclear weapons, left a vulnerable nation exposed while abandoning the very principles of diplomacy and trust. The callous treatment of Gaza and the inflammatory rhetoric calling for ethnic cleansing is deeply troubling. It is an affront to basic human dignity and the values of peace and justice that the Nobel Peace Prize is meant to represent. Moreover, his unprovoked threats against sovereign nations like Canada, Panama, and Greenland only serve to further isolate the U.S. on the world stage, and contribute to the erosion of the international norms that ensure cooperation and peace. Donald Trump’s actions during his time in office are the opposite of what this prestigious award stands for. He has turned his back on our allies, damaged global relationships, and prioritized personal interests over national and international well-being. It is an insult to those who have worked tirelessly for peace and stability to see him nominated for this prize. This nomination is not only undeserved, it is a disgrace to the office of the presidency and a betrayal of the values we hold dear as a nation. You are a disgrace and an embarrassment to the office you hold and the constituents you are supposedly representing.
