Urgent Request for Rent Freeze in Emergency-Fire Impacted Areas

To: Gov. Newsom, Sen. Menjivar, Asm. Rodriguez

From: A verified voter in Valley Village, CA

January 11

I am writing to urge your immediate action in implementing a temporary rent freeze for residents of Los Angeles County and other areas impacted by the recent wildfires. These devastating fires have displaced families, destroyed homes, and created immense financial burdens for renters who are already struggling with one of the highest costs of living in the country. The wildfires have intensified housing insecurity by reducing the supply of available units, which in turn increases competition and drives up rent prices. Many renters are left vulnerable, unable to absorb higher costs while simultaneously grappling with disaster recovery expenses. Without intervention, this crisis could exacerbate homelessness and economic inequality in our community. I ask that you advocate for and support a rent freeze across all wildfire-affected areas during this emergency period. Such a measure would: 1. Provide Stability: Ensuring renters are not subjected to sudden rent increases during their recovery. 2. Protect Vulnerable Populations: Safeguard low-income families, seniors, and individuals who are disproportionately affected by rising housing costs. 3. Allow for Recovery: Offer financial relief for those who have already lost so much. We need policies that reflect compassion and fairness during such extraordinary times. A rent freeze is a reasonable, urgent response to protect our communities and prevent further displacement.
