Political appointees at the Department of Homeland Security secretly asked CISA to acquire and hack a voting machine, then directed the agency not to alert the manufacturer if flaws were found. A former official said the goal was to "keep it in their back pocket to invalidate any results they don't like." That is not a policy disagreement. That is an attempt to corrupt the process. The damage goes far beyond one request. The administration has laid off more than 1,000 CISA employees, shrinking the agency by a third, and Trump's 2027 budget would cut another $700 million. CISA was nonexistent during the critical planning window for the 2026 midterms, according to election security expert Ryan Macias. Sensitive state data shared with CISA in confidence was then declassified and published to prop up debunked 2020 conspiracy theories. State officials now say they will not share information with the agency at all. Election security depends on trust between federal and state partners built over years. That trust has been deliberately shredded. Congress must demand answers, restore CISA's funding and staffing, and make clear that using federal cybersecurity infrastructure to undermine election results is unacceptable.
