Investigate ICE Detention Abuses and Close Delaney Hall and Dilley

To: Sen. McCormick, Rep. Smucker, Sen. Fetterman

From: A verified voter in Lititz, PA

July 14

Hold public oversight hearings on ICE detention conditions and demand the closure of Delaney Hall and Dilley. Over 300 detainees at Delaney Hall — a for-profit GEO Group facility in Newark — went on hunger strike to protest spoiled food, physical abuse, and denied medical care. Elected officials, including Gov. Sherrill, have been turned away at the door. That alone warrants an investigation. The scale of what's happening to children is unconscionable. More than 6,300 kids, including infants as young as 2 months old, have been detained since 2025. Families at Dilley report no clean water and inadequate medical care. One family was locked up for 10 months before a federal judge ordered their release. Only 3% of all ICE detainees have a violent felony conviction — the rest, including these children, have no criminal record. ICE has also quietly stopped reporting deaths that occur within 30 days of release, gutting what little accountability existed. Push for the release of children, pregnant people, and medically vulnerable detainees now. Oppose any expansion of private detention contracts. These facilities are not safer or cheaper — they're less accountable, and people are dying in them.
