Pass Press Act to protect First Amendment rights
To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley
From: A constituent in Maryville, MO
December 7, 2024
The Press Act, S. 2074, aims to protect journalists and whistleblowers from having their records seized by federal agencies, upholding press freedoms and First Amendment rights as intended to be by our Founding Fathers. It prohibits the federal government from compelling disclosure of source information or records related to newsgathering, with limited exemptions to prevent terrorism or imminent violence. This legislation safeguards the ability of the press to report on matters of public concern without fear of retaliation or intimidation from the government. By supporting the Press Act, Congress can reinforce its commitment to preserving free speech and a free press as core democratic values. I strongly urge you to pass the PRESS Act to preserve the First Amendment and protect the rights of journalists to be the Fourth Estate they were intended to be.
