I am writing as your constituent in Alaska to urge you in the strongest possible terms to oppose any budget reconciliation bill that cuts essential healthcare and social safety net programs to fund expanded ICE and CBP operations or military action in Iran.
Alaskans are no strangers to hardship. Many of us live in remote communities with already limited access to healthcare, and thousands of families across our state rely on Affordable Care Act financial assistance to afford coverage. Cutting these programs is not an abstraction — it is a direct threat to the health and lives of your constituents.
I am deeply troubled that, despite bipartisan support for restoring government funding, Republicans have allowed the partial shutdown to drag on and are now pursuing reconciliation as a vehicle to push through policies that the American people do not want. Using this process to fund expanded immigration enforcement, finance an illegal war in Iran, and potentially advance voter suppression legislation is a betrayal of the public trust.
Alaska has long valued independence, self-reliance, and community. Those values are undermined — not upheld — when our neighbors lose healthcare coverage so that resources can be funneled into an imperialist foreign policy and a cruel domestic enforcement agenda. Alaskans are already dealing with skyrocketing fuel and healthcare costs. We cannot afford further cuts to the programs we depend on.
I urge you to stand firm: reject any reconciliation bill that offsets new spending with cuts to healthcare or other essential services. Hold this administration accountable for the harm its policies are causing, and return Congress’s focus to the real needs of working Alaskans.
Thank you for your time and service. I look forward to your response.
