The executive branch claims it can't (or is it just won’t’t) return an innocent man from a notorious El Salvadoran prison, though ordered to do so by the US Supreme Court and Federal courts. The US government has admitted to mistakenly deporting Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a person with protected status here—never a terrorist— because he sought asylum at age sixteen when his parents were extorted by a gang, and he was threatened with gang violence. He is married to a US citizen, and he has a special needs child. He has no criminal record. However, he is working class. If only he had the money to buy an EB-5 visa. "Of course I'm not going to do it," Mr. Bukele said when reporters asked if he was willing to help return the man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, whose case is at the heart of a legal battle that has gone to the Supreme Court. Mr. Bukele said returning Mr. Abrego Garcia would be akin to smuggling "a terrorist into the United States." As the Salvadoran president talked, Mr. Trump smiled in approval. 72% of Americans disapprove of deporting non criminal legal residents of the United States. If ICE can summarily decide who is a criminal and put those people beyond the reach of constitutional law, then none of us are safe from the threat of rendition. The constitution affords everyone within the US due process. Trump has violated the constitution and seems intent to continue, now suggesting sending US citizens to this El Salvador torture prison. I am certain that you are against this. Please continue to speak up for those whose due process rights have been stripped and help to protect all of us. If immigrants (legal or not) do not have due process rights, then none of us do.
