Say NO to book bans - Support HR6440/S3365

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Carter

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

February 19

The freedom to read is not negotiable, not partisan, and not optional. It is a cornerstone of a free society. Congress must immediately pass the Right to Read Act (H.R. 6440 / S. 3365). Across this country, students, educators, and librarians are being caught in a manufactured culture war that has no place in our schools. Books are being stripped from shelves. Professionals are being intimidated. Young people are being told that curiosity is dangerous. This is unacceptable. Pass this legislation now because: • Fund Literacy, Don’t Starve It: The bill reauthorizes the Comprehensive Literacy State Development Program ($500 million) and the Innovative Approaches to Literacy Program ($100 million). Literacy is not a luxury item to be cut — it is the foundation of education, workforce readiness, and civic participation. • Protect Access & Expertise: Students deserve trained, state-certified school librarians — not empty libraries and political interference. This act supports staffing that ensures children have access to high-quality, age-appropriate, and diverse reading materials. • Stop the Wave of Censorship: Book bans are spreading fear, silencing voices, and eroding intellectual freedom. This legislation pushes back — defending the right of students to read and the right of educators to teach without threats, retaliation, or prosecution. • Prepare Students for Reality: Information and digital literacy are survival skills in the modern world. The Right to Read Act empowers schools to equip students to think critically, evaluate sources, and navigate a complex media landscape. Let’s be clear: No student, librarian, teacher, or parent should fear punishment for reading a book. The United States does not criminalize ideas. We do not prosecute imagination. We do not legislate ignorance. Congress, your duty is not to inflame panic — it is to defend constitutional freedoms and invest in the nation’s future. Pass the Right to Read Act. Stand for literacy. Stand for educators. Stand for the fundamental right to read without fear. History will remember whether you protected freedom — or surrendered it.
