Don’t Mess With Texas! Protect Big Bend National Park

To: Sen. Schwertner, Rep. Harris Davila, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

August 6

I am a proud Texan. I adore our beautiful state. Big Bend is a Texan and national treasure! I am asking you to stop the construction of new border wall segments in Big Bend National Park and other remote areas along the Rio Grande. The financial burden of building a wall in this terrain is enormous. The environmental and economic damage to the Big Bend region is even greater. These projects threaten communities, wildlife, tourism, and the natural resources that make Big Bend one of Texas’s most important and irreplaceable treasures. The return on investment is effectively zero. This is not responsible environmental stewardship or use of taxpayer money. It is not sound policy. I am asking you to protect Big Bend, protect the Rio Grande, and protect Texas taxpayers. End this project now. I am adamantly opposed to the construction of vehicle barrier systems, new patrol roads, or walls in or around Big Bend National Park. Any surveillance should be virtual, not by physical barrier. These are environmentally sensitive areas, and they also contain important indigenous archaeological sites. Moreover, a vehicle barrier is senseless because regular vehicles cannot traverse the river and rough terrain there. This is a waste of taxpayer dollars on the destruction of public lands that belong to the people, the wildlife and the future. Don’t Mess With Texas!
