As a citizen of Louisiana, I’m urging you to support a uniform statewide policy on police pursuits. I believe in holding people accountable for serious crimes—but I also believe that high-speed chases for nonviolent offenses like theft put too many lives at risk.
Right now, Louisiana has no consistent standard for when officers should initiate or end a pursuit. That means departments make their own rules, and the public pays the price. Innocent people have been killed or injured in chases that began over property crimes. We need clear, statewide guidelines that prioritize public safety and limit pursuits to cases involving violent or life-threatening offenses.
Other states have adopted such policies with success. It’s time for Louisiana to do the same.
Please support legislation that creates a uniform police pursuit policy. Let’s protect our communities without compromising justice.
