As a long-time Texas resident, a woman, and a mother of school-aged children, I am writing to voice my strong opposition to any form of school voucher legislation currently under consideration.
Texas public schools have long been a cornerstone of our communities, offering not only education but also support systems, meals, extracurricular activities, and a sense of belonging for millions of children. I believe that diverting public funds to private institutions—many of which are not held to the same standards of transparency, accountability, or inclusivity—will undermine our public education system and hurt the very students who need the most support.
Vouchers do not offer true “school choice” for most Texas families. Instead, they often serve as subsidies for families who already have the means to send their children to private schools. Meanwhile, rural areas like mine may not even have private school options, leaving our public schools further underfunded and overstretched. The result is fewer resources for teachers, larger class sizes, and diminished opportunities for all.
As a parent, I want the best for my children, but I also want a Texas where every child—regardless of ZIP code or income level—has access to a strong, well-funded public school. We should be investing more in our public schools, not diverting funds away from them.
I urge you to stand with Texas families and public school educators by rejecting any school voucher bill. Our children deserve better.
