Oppose CRA Rollback of Boundary Waters Protections

To: Sen. Hyde-Smith, Sen. Wicker

From: A verified voter in Bay Saint Louis, MS

February 23

I am writing to urge opposition to the use of the Congressional Review Act to overturn the federal mineral withdrawal protecting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the surrounding Superior National Forest. Repealing these protections would open the door to sulfide ore copper nickel mining in one of the most pristine freshwater ecosystems in North America, placing clean water, outdoor recreation, and long standing conservation values at serious risk. The Boundary Waters is not simply a regional asset. It is a national treasure built around interconnected lakes and rivers that cannot be remediated once contaminated. Sulfide ore mining carries a well documented risk of acid mine drainage that can pollute downstream waters for generations. Once that damage occurs, no reclamation plan can truly restore what was lost. This proposal is also deeply troubling from a national interest standpoint. A foreign mining company would be positioned to extract American mineral resources from public lands and sell them into global markets, including to China, where they would be traded to the highest bidder. That does not strengthen domestic supply chains, nor does it reflect an America First strategy. It externalizes environmental risk to American communities while allowing profits and strategic leverage to flow overseas. Mississippi may be far from northern Minnesota, but the principle at stake is national. Public lands belong to all Americans. They should not be sacrificed through procedural maneuvering that sidesteps thorough debate, scientific review, and broad public input. The Congressional Review Act was not designed to retroactively dismantle complex land management decisions years after they were finalized. Protecting clean water, conserving public lands, and ensuring that American resources truly serve American interests are bipartisan responsibilities. I respectfully urge you to oppose this effort and stand for long term stewardship, national sovereignty over our resources, and transparent legislative process.
