Pass S. 4973 to protect civil liberties and democracy
To: Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley
From: A constituent in Portland, OR
November 21
The recent Supreme Court ruling protecting nonprofits from being forced to disclose their major donors is critical for safeguarding freedom of association. Allowing the President unbridled authority to target and harass organizations by demanding their private donor lists would have a profound chilling effect on civil society. The No Kings Act, S. 4973, upholds this cornerstone of democracy by preventing any person, including the President, from unjustly going after nonprofits and advocacy groups. It reinforces that the government cannot wield its investigative powers for partisan purposes against groups it disagrees with, an essential check against abuses of power the President doesn't approve of.
