Constituent Concern: Aligning Federal Execution Methods with the 8th Amendment
To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Beatty, Sen. Moreno

I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the Department of Justice's move to include firing squads and gas chambers in federal execution protocols.
The United States is a modern, enlightened nation. We should be a global leader in human rights, not a country that reverts to barbaric methods to carry out the law. Civilized nations have largely abandoned these practices, and for our government to readopt them is a regression of our national character.
My stance is based on three key points:
1. Constitutional Integrity: Our legal system is built on the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. Utilizing outdated, primitive methods to project state authority contradicts the progress we have made in upholding the dignity of our own Constitution.
2. Administrative Integrity: The push for these methods appears to be driven by administrative convenience and a desire for speed rather than justice. A government that prioritizes convenience over humane standards risks its own legitimacy and the public’s trust in the legal system.
3. Humane Standards: If the federal government is to carry out capital punishment, it must utilize only the most humane and effective methods available. Administrative convenience or a desire for "speed" never justifies the use of cruel methods.
I urge you to oppose the use of firing squads and gas chambers and to support legislation that ensures federal justice remains humane and aligned with modern standards. Our nation’s strength should be measured by our commitment to justice and human rights, not by the harshness of our punishments.
