I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I do not believe the current federal administration has my family's best interests at heart or those of Wisconsin citizens.
Cutting programs and workers who safeguard the quality of our food and medicine is not in the best interests of my family. I need to trust that the things we put into our bodies are safe, and federal regulators have been a huge piece of that for decades.
Shutting down studies like the Women's Health Initiative, which has made huge gains in understanding and treating the women of our nation over decades, is not in the best interests of my family -- especially me and my young daughter. Shutting down research into Alzheimer's and other chronic diseases is not in our best interests, as I have personally watched this ravage members of my own family.
Closing down the Department of Education while simultaneously attacking free speech and the freedom of local schools and teachers to educate students is not in my family's best interests. Creating websites that encourage people to "report" on teachers will not create an atmosphere of healthy education where teachers are excited to join the profession and grow in their craft.
Attacking what the president says is a liberal ideology and anti-Semitism on higher education campuses, only to replace it with his own personal ideology and asking them to rubber-stamp whatever he deems as correct is not education or democracy, and it will not create an academic environment of exploration and discovery. It will and is driving the best scientists and students to other campuses and countries, and that is not in the best interests of my family and my children's future.
I am saddened and angered at the vast disconnect between the actions of this administration and the actual lives and needs of the American people -- people like my family and community here in Wisconsin. Please do the job you were placed in Washington to do. Please stand up for actual American families and what we need to keep our families safe, healthy, and with opportunities for a thriving future. Listen to what the people of Wisconsin actually want, because it does not match the decisions being made by our president.
