Urgent Concern: Human Rights Abuses in Immigration Enforcement
To: Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman, Rep. Smucker
From: A verified voter in Strasburg, PA
December 17
I am writing to you as a deeply concerned constituent to express my immense horror and disgust at the recent treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers by federal immigration enforcement agencies. Human beings in this country — including those with long ties to the U.S., students, and people pursuing legal pathways — are being subjected to treatment that is cruel, inhumane, and contrary to American values. Recent news reports highlight troubling examples: • A 19-year-old college student, who has lived in the U.S. since childhood and is a freshman at Babson College, was detained by immigration officials while attempting to board a domestic flight to visit her family for Thanksgiving. Despite a federal judge issuing an emergency order blocking her removal, she was transferred to another state and deported to Honduras within 48 hours. Her family was reportedly unaware of key details regarding her immigration status and court orders. • Long-time U.S. residents and legal immigrants are also being detained unexpectedly during routine procedures — for example, an Indian woman who has lived in the United States since 1994 was reportedly detained by ICE at her Green Card interview, causing deep family distress and raising questions about the broader policy and its application. These stories are not isolated; across the country there are reports of people being detained at airports, during USCIS interviews, and even after complying with legal requirements. Enforcement actions are often occurring without clear communication, adequate due process, or transparency about why these individuals — many without criminal histories — are being targeted. This situation is morally unacceptable and undermines our justice system, family unity, and the principles of due process and proportionality that Americans expect and deserve. I respectfully urge you to support and advocate for: 1 Stronger Congressional oversight of immigration enforcement practices, including transparency about inter-agency data sharing (e.g., TSA/ICE passenger data) and criteria for detention and deportation. 2 Accountability measures to ensure individuals’ rights to due process are protected and federal court orders are respected in immigration enforcement procedures. 3 Policy reforms that focus immigration enforcement resources on genuinely dangerous individuals rather than students, lawful applicants, long-term residents, and asylum seekers who pose no threat to public safety. Our immigration system should be fair, humane, and just — not one in which people are torn from their families and communities without proper notice or opportunity to defend themselves. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical issue. I look forward to your response and to hearing how you plan to address these abuses.
