Americans are struggling with the cost of getting around and the health effects of transportation pollution. Clean cars are an important part of the solution, but some in Congress are trying to pass a new tax on electric and hybrid vehicles that could effectively destroy the clean cars industry while raising prices for American families.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee just released a draft bill that includes an anti-EV disaster: A $130–$150 fee on EVs and a $30–$50 fee on hybrids.
Transportation is the largest source of pollution and the second largest household budget item in the U.S. And with global conflict jacking up prices at the pump, this scheme to push gas-guzzling cars onto consumers is going to hurt American families when they can least afford it.
If succeed, this could raise costs for families, destroy EV manufacturing jobs, and increase climate pollution by up to 97 million metric tons. That’s the equivalent of adding 23 million gas-powered cars to the road for a year.
We won’t accept this attack on clean cars.
