Urgent Action Needed on Unlawful Deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

To: Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego, Rep. Crane

From: A verified voter in Prescott, AZ

April 1

I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the wrongful deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident with protected legal status, who was unlawfully removed from the United States due to what the Trump administration is now calling an “administrative error.” He now finds himself imprisoned in El Salvador under dire conditions, and the administration claims that U.S. courts lack jurisdiction to rectify this egregious mistake. This is not just a tragic bureaucratic oversight—it is a profound violation of justice, due process, and basic human rights. Mr. Abrego Garcia had already been granted “withholding of removal” by a U.S. immigration judge, explicitly recognizing that deportation would place him in imminent danger. He had lived a stable life in the United States, working as a union sheet-metal apprentice and caring for his disabled U.S. citizen child. He posed no threat to his community. Yet, despite his legal protections, he was forcibly taken from his family and shipped to a prison known for its inhumane treatment of detainees. The government’s position—that courts are powerless to order his return—is as legally dubious as it is morally bankrupt. If allowed to stand, this precedent would effectively render all immigration protections meaningless. It would signal that government agencies can act with impunity, ignoring established legal safeguards, and that the courts have no authority to correct such injustices after the fact. Mr. Abrego Garcia’s deportation was not just an unfortunate clerical mistake—it was an unconscionable abuse of power. His family has been left in anguish, and the administration’s refusal to take responsibility or take action to bring him back is both cruel and unacceptable. Congress must not stand by while this injustice goes unchallenged. I urge you to take immediate action by: 1. Demanding Mr. Abrego Garcia’s return through all available diplomatic and legislative means. 2. Launching an investigation into the administration’s handling of this case and similar deportations. 3. Introducing legislation to ensure that courts retain the power to rectify wrongful deportations and that no future administration can exploit legal loopholes to override immigration protections. This is not a partisan issue. It is a matter of basic human rights and the rule of law. If we allow the wrongful deportation of a legally protected individual to stand uncorrected, we are endorsing a system where due process is expendable and no immigrant—regardless of their legal status—is truly safe. I implore you to act swiftly and decisively. Mr. Abrego Garcia’s life may depend on it.
