A Mandate for Accountability, Reform, and Action

To: Rep. Leger Fernandez

From: A constituent in Santa Fe, NM

November 4

Congratulations on last night's extraordinary election results. Americans have delivered a mandate for change, and Democrats now have a responsibility to restore the rule of law, protect our democracy, and enact policies that make life better and more affordable for all. We've watched the Trump administration and its allies undermine democratic institutions, weaken environmental protections, and erode public trust. Winning elections is only the beginning. What matters now is what Democrats do with the power voters have entrusted to them. You have a progressive mandate, so use it. I have four direct questions: 1. How many weeks into the new Congress will we see investigations, public hearings, and referrals for potential prosecution of current and former Republican officials who may have violated the law during the Trump administration? I recognize that prosecutions belong to the DOJ and courts, but the House has substantial investigative and oversight authority. When will you exercise it to ensure credible evidence of wrongdoing receives independent scrutiny? 2. How quickly will the House act to restore environmental protections dismantled under Trump? As a New Mexican, protecting our public lands, clean air, water, and natural resources is especially important to me. What specific legislative and oversight actions can we expect in the first 100 days? 3. Americans need more than political victories. We need affordable healthcare, housing, energy, and everyday necessities. What legislation will House Democrats prioritize to deliver measurable improvements, and when will it be introduced and brought to a vote? 4. We expect an open, transparent, and democratic process for selecting House Democratic leadership. Leadership positions should not be treated as entitlements, and incumbents should not be automatically anointed. This is a democracy, and Democratic leadership should practice what it preaches. Will you support a competitive process that allows alternative candidates to make their case and offers a clear vision for the party's future? I understand that legislation takes time, presidential vetoes remain an obstacle, and courts must operate independently. But those realities cannot become excuses for inaction. The House has the power to investigate, hold hearings, introduce legislation, and demand accountability. We expect that power to be used. Americans have given Democrats a tremendous opportunity. We expect accountability, protection of our environment and democratic institutions, and a government that works for ordinary people rather than the wealthy and powerful. I'm asking for a timeline, not simply a statement of shared values. What should constituents expect in the first 30, 60, and 100 days? What actions will you personally champion, and how will we measure progress? Congratulations again. Now comes the harder, far more important work of delivering on that promise.
