Investigate and Prosecute ICE for Theft of Detainees' Personal Property

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

October 14

Investigate ICE for the systematic theft of personal property from immigration detainees and pursue criminal prosecution of those responsible. A woman went to an ICE facility to collect a detainee's belongings and was handed a complete stranger's wallet and iPhone. That careless handoff did not reveal a clerical error. It exposed a pattern: cash, identification, and personal property stripped from vulnerable people before they are removed to foreign countries. These are not isolated mistakes. This is a state-sponsored theft ring operating inside a federal agency. People are being yanked from their lives, their vehicles abandoned, their families left to pick up the pieces, and their property pocketed by the agency detaining them. Removing someone's identification before deporting them is not an administrative oversight. It is a deliberate act that leaves people stranded and unable to prove who they are. A full investigation with subpoena power, followed by prosecution where the evidence supports it, is the only appropriate response to what the facts already show.
