Petition to Halt the Imposition of Tariffs on Mexico and Canada

To: Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly, Rep. Hamadeh

From: A constituent in Phoenix, AZ

February 4

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada, with a 10% tariff on Canadian oil and energy products. These tariffs, set to take effect on February 4, 2025, will have significant economic repercussions and threaten our long-standing trade relationships. Economic Consequences The tariffs are expected to increase consumer prices across essential goods, including fresh produce, automobiles, and electronics. Economic analysts estimate that American households could face an annual cost increase of approximately $2,600 due to these tariffs. Additionally, U.S. manufacturers reliant on imported materials will experience increased production costs, leading to job losses and slowed economic growth. Stock Market Disruptions Investor confidence has already been shaken by these tariffs. On January 31, 2025, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) dropped 0.8%, closing 337 points lower following the tariff announcement. Markets fear further instability, with potential capital flight and slower investment growth, which could harm our long-term economic stability. (AP News) International Relations at Risk Mexico and Canada are two of our largest trading partners and closest allies. Both nations have already signaled their intent to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports, which could harm American farmers, manufacturers, and businesses. Rather than strengthening our position, these tariffs risk escalating into a full-blown trade war, which history has shown leads to economic downturns. Legal and Trade Agreement Violations These tariffs could violate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was designed to facilitate free and fair trade among our nations. Moreover, invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify these tariffs is legally unprecedented and could face court challenges, further delaying economic recovery. (Reuters) Call to Action In light of these urgent concerns, I urge you to: 1. Reevaluate the Decision – Conduct an immediate assessment of the economic and diplomatic consequences of these tariffs. 2. Engage in Diplomatic Dialogue – Seek negotiations with Mexico and Canada to address trade concerns without imposing punitive tariffs. 3. Explore Alternative Solutions – Address economic and security concerns through non-tariff measures that do not risk economic instability. By reconsidering the implementation of these tariffs, we can protect American families, businesses, and workers from unnecessary financial hardship while preserving our international alliances.
