I am writing to urgently request your intervention regarding the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals on February 3, 2026. Reports indicate that federal immigration authorities (ICE) are planning a 30-day enforcement "surge" in Springfield, Ohio, immediately following this deadline.
This aggressive approach threatens to create a humanitarian disaster and an economic crisis in our district.
Local officials and business leaders in Springfield have made it clear: Haitian workers are essential to the local revitalization. They are filling critical labor shortages in manufacturing and service industries. Removing thousands of these legally present, hardworking individuals from our workforce overnight will cause significant economic damage to Ohio businesses.
Furthermore, a militarized enforcement surge will tear apart families and leave over 1,300 children in our schools without parents. This is not a solution; it is a destabilizing force for our community.
I ask that you use your office to take the following actions immediately:
Demand an Extension of TPS: Urge the Department of Homeland Security and the President to extend or redesignate TPS for Haiti. The conditions in Haiti that warranted the original designation remain dire, and our local economy relies on these residents.
Oppose the ICE "Surge": Publicly call on ICE to stand down from targeting the Springfield community. Federal resources should not be used to dismantle a revitalized local economy or terrorize families who have been complying with the law.
Support Long-Term Solutions: We need a legislative solution that provides stability for our workforce, not cyclical deportation threats that harm Ohio industries.
Please stand up for Springfield. Protect our economy and our neighbors from this unnecessary crisis.
