I’m deeply concerned about the dangerous staffing shortages and equipment failures now affecting the Newark sector of New York TRACON, which was recently relocated to Philadelphia.
Air traffic controllers have reported alarming issues:
• As few as 3–6 controllers working a shift responsible for Newark, Teterboro, Morristown, and Caldwell
• Multiple radar and communication failures, including a full loss of contact with aircraft in November 2024
• Overlapping, high-volume airspace being managed with dangerously outdated systems and no backup
• Pilots being told to switch frequencies without readback just to keep the airwaves clear
These problems are not caused by negligence—but by a total lack of staffing and technological investment. This is no longer about inconvenience; it’s about public safety.
I’m asking you to:
1. Push for an immediate investigation into staffing and infrastructure failures at the Philadelphia TRACON handling Newark sector traffic.
2. Demand transparency from the FAA about the relocation decision and its impact on safety and efficiency.
3. Support emergency funding for updated radar/communication systems and accelerated, merit-based hiring of air traffic controllers.
The integrity of our air traffic system is at stake. Aviation professionals are sounding the alarm. Please listen—and act—before a serious tragedy occurs.
