Reject anti-abortion assault on human rights in Louisiana
To: Sen. Eckhardt, Rep. Cole

The anti-abortion legislation being pushed in Louisiana is an egregious violation of fundamental human rights and bodily autonomy. Forcing child rape victims to carry their pregnancies to term is unconscionable and will only compound the trauma and suffering they have already endured. Denying access to safe abortion care, even in cases of rape and incest, displays a callous disregard for the well-being and lived experiences of these vulnerable individuals. This draconian attack on reproductive freedom goes against the will of the majority of Louisiana voters who support exceptions for rape and incest. It will also exacerbate the state's dire shortage of obstetricians and gynecologists, as healthcare providers face the risk of prosecution for providing essential prenatal and miscarriage care. Classifying abortion pills as controlled substances is an unwarranted overreach that could criminalize not just providers but also those seeking to exercise their fundamental right to bodily autonomy. The government has no place in making such personal and private medical decisions on behalf of its citizens. These extreme measures will only lead to more hardship, particularly for marginalized communities. I urge you to reject this assault on human rights and instead prioritize evidence-based policies that protect the health, safety, and freedom of all Louisianans.
