Congressional Responsibility and the Erosion of U.S. Leadership

To: Rep. Beatty, Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted

From: A constituent in Columbus, OH

January 13

I am writing as a constituent to state clearly that many Americans do not want war, constant provocation, or the deliberate antagonizing of allies and civilians by the Trump administration. We respect our NATO allies and the sovereign status of other nations. U.S. defense systems, funded by taxpayers, should exist to protect the country and maintain global stability--not to posture, intimidate, or provoke conflicts that undermine long-standing alliances and increase global risk. America’s leadership has lost its way. Penalizing and exhausting U.S. cities ignores the fact that urban centers generate a disproportionate share of the nation’s tax base, research output, and cultural capital. Treating cities as adversaries weakens the country economically and socially. We are also losing our best talent. Researchers, engineers, artists, and scholars are choosing universities overseas. International experts are declining to enter the United States for conferences and collaboration due to reports of masked border agents, arbitrary treatment, and human-rights violations that have created a climate of fear. This reputational damage has real and lasting consequences for American innovation and competitiveness. Congress is not doing enough to protect its citizens or to exercise its constitutional role as a check on executive power. Recent reports of U.S. managed Venezuelan oil revenues moving into offshore accounts, concerns about the integrity of financial oversight, and broader questions about the independence of the Federal Reserve point to a dangerous lack of accountability. It has become increasingly clear that no one is effectively holding the reins. Congress must reassert its authority, demand transparency, and restore ethical and institutional boundaries. Silence or passivity in the face of these developments is not neutrality. It is abdication. The United States should lead through stability, credibility, and respect for democratic norms. I urge you to act accordingly.
