Vote no on the Graham-Britt-Schmitt legislation to spend $400 million in taxpayer funds on Trump's White House ballroom. This is fiscal insanity.
Republicans just cut Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, and VA benefits while handing tax cuts to the wealthy. You claimed there was no money for TSA and other services Congress already authorized. Now you want to raid the Treasury for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom while we're $39 trillion in debt? Senator Rick Scott is right to question this.
Trump has already raised private money for this project. Comcast and other corporations are lining up to donate. If he wants his ballroom, let his donors pay for it. Private events happen outside the White House every day. We don't need to bankrupt the country building reinforced ballrooms for every gathering.
This project started with Trump illegally demolishing the East Wing without congressional approval. Rewarding that with $400 million sends a clear message that laws don't matter if you have enough power. Don't compound that mistake by forcing working families to pay for what amounts to a vanity project while their benefits get slashed.
The votes aren't there for this in the Senate. Don't waste time trying to jam it through reconciliation while Homeland Security remains shut down during a record-long closure.
