Governor, how dare you turn your back on Texas’ children!

To: Gov. Abbott

From: A constituent in Huntington, TX

June 24

One in five children in Texas goes to bed hungry. That is not just a statistic—it’s a crisis. And in the face of that crisis, you chose to veto a $450 million program that would have provided desperately needed food assistance. Almost the entire cost of that program would have been covered by the federal government. It wouldn’t have drained Texas’s coffers. It wouldn’t have burdened taxpayers. It would have fed hungry children. And you said no. Seriously—have you no shame? What happened to basic human decency? Did your mother not teach you to care for those in need? Where are the values of compassion and responsibility that leaders are supposed to embody? If you claim to uphold Christian values, then explain this: what part of “feed the hungry” do you not understand? Texas children are facing a full-blown food insecurity emergency—and your response was to slam the door in their faces. Instead of stepping up to help, you turned your back on them and left them to suffer. Your veto didn’t just reject a bill. It rejected the well-being of millions of Texas children. It told them that their hunger doesn’t matter. This isn’t just a policy disagreement. It’s moral failure. It is unconscionable. It is cruel. Governor, you cannot call yourself a leader—not if you abandon the most vulnerable people in our state. You cannot call yourself a man of faith—not if you refuse to lift a finger to feed starving children. And you certainly cannot claim to represent Texas values when you undermine the very communities you were elected to protect. This veto is an act of deliberate neglect. And Texans will remember. Do better—or step aside for someone who will.
