I am writing to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of alarm over recent events in Minneapolis involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On January 7, 2026, Renée Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother, partner, writer, and long-time community member, was shot and killed by an ICE agent during a federal enforcement operation. The incident has been recorded on video, widely shared, and widely protested. According to eyewitness accounts and statements from her wife, Good posed no imminent threat to federal agents when she was shot. She had been stopped in her vehicle, partially blocking traffic, and at no point did she pose clear lethal danger to the officer who fired three shots at her at close range. Her death has sparked protests not only in Minneapolis but across the country, with thousands demanding accountability and an end to ICE’s increasingly aggressive tactics. Thousands marched in Minneapolis and hundreds of “ICE Out” rallies were planned nationwide. This tragedy raises profound concerns: 1. Overreach of Federal Authority ICE is operating with expanding power and minimal local oversight, often without accountability to the communities on whose streets they enforce. The fact that Good was killed on sight in circumstances that many witnesses and local leaders have described as unthreatening highlights how far out of control federal enforcement has become. 2. Disproportionate Use of Force The shooting of a U.S. citizen in a non-violent situation — absent clear, imminent threat of death or serious injury — is horrifying. The justification of “self-defense” offered by Homeland Security officials has been fiercely disputed by Minneapolis leaders and ordinary citizens who saw the footage and heard witness testimony. 3. Escalation of Violence Driven by Personal & Political Tensions It is unconscionable that a person should lose their life because federal authority is being placed above human life. Whether or not you agree with ICE’s mission, the killing of an unarmed, non-violent woman with deep community ties — after a day of aggressive raids — should alarm us all. To many observers, this incident typifies the dangerous environment where federal agents act beyond meaningful restrictions, sometimes in reaction to perceived slights, frustrations, or poorly handled confrontations. 4. Broader Context of a Fracturing Nation Americans — from citizens to immigrants to activists — are witnessing unprecedented escalation in enforcement tactics without accountability. Many are rightfully scared. When people see this kind of unchecked power applied with deadly consequences, we lose faith in the idea that government exists to protect its people. For the sake of Renée Good, her family, and all Americans who are being terrorized or harmed by federal actions, I urge the following: ✔ Immediate, transparent federal investigation into the actions of the ICE agent involved, with full participation from independent state authorities; ✔ A moratorium on aggressive raids and enforcement operations until clear, accountable standards are set and oversight strengthened; ✔ Legislative review of ICE use-of-force policies, including enforceable limits on when and how federal agents may deploy lethal force; ✔ Support for victims’ families, including clear remedies and protections for civil rights violations. This nation cannot continue down a path where a woman’s life is forfeit because federal agents act without consequence. This is not safety. This is not justice. It is a betrayal of the values we claim to uphold. I urge you to act boldly now — before another life is lost.
