Decriminalizing Psilocybin
To: Sen. Lawrence
From: A constituent in Eliot, ME
June 4, 2025
I am writing to respectfully urge you to support legislation aimed at decriminalizing psilocybin in the state of Maine.
There is a growing body of research from respected institutions, including Johns Hopkins University and NYU, that demonstrates psilocybin’s potential in treating conditions such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, and substance use disorders—especially when other treatments have failed. Psilocybin-assisted therapy has shown promise in providing long-term relief, improving quality of life, and in some cases, saving lives.
Beyond the science, this is also an issue of compassion and access. Many Mainers are struggling with mental health challenges, and they deserve access to every potentially effective tool available, especially those shown to be safe and non-addictive when used in a therapeutic setting.
Decriminalization does not mean deregulation—it simply allows for a more humane, evidence-based approach that prioritizes public health over punishment. Maine has the opportunity to be a national leader in thoughtful, progressive mental health reform.
Please support this legislation and help bring relief, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
