An Open Letter
To: Sen. Cornyn

August 3
Senator Cornyn,
I urge you to vote against the confirmation of President Trump's personal attorney as Attorney General. The assurances he has offered regarding the proposed billion-dollar-plus fund to compensate those convicted or charged in connection with January 6 are simply not sufficient. They still leave open the possibility that the Department of Justice would be used to advance President Trump's personal interests rather than serve the public. The IRS immunity deal cements that impropriety.
The Attorney General serves the American people—not the President personally. There is no reason a qualified, independent nominee cannot be selected instead. Confirming the President's own personal lawyer creates an unavoidable appearance of a conflict of interest and does nothing to reassure Americans that the Department of Justice will act independently.
I ask you to put the interests of the country above partisan loyalty and vote no.
Thank you for your consideration.
