Support Michigan Ratepayer Bill of Rights

To: Sen. Chang, Gov. Whitmer, Rep. McFall

From: A constituent in Hazel Park, MI

May 1

Michigan households and businesses pay the highest energy rates in the Midwest with the longest time out of power in the country. Monopoly utility companies DTE and Consumers Energy rake in record profits, raise our rates by hundreds of millions of dollars every year and hand out massive CEO bonuses while we are left in the dark. Energy costs and utility company greed have gotten out of control. We need a Michigan Ratepayer Bill of Rights that would: 1. Guarantee Michiganders the right to fair compensation when the power goes out 2. Ensure residents no longer pay the highest energy costs in the Midwest for some of the worst service in the country 3. Protect residents from paying for CEO bonuses and private jets while being left in the dark 4. Ban political contributions to state lawmakers from the utilities they’re supposed to oversee on behalf of the people 5. Ensure residents can generate their own reliable energy through solar arrays on their homes or with their neighbors I urge you to support and pass a Michigan Ratepayer Bill of Rights to protect Michigan families and small businesses from skyrocketing costs and poor utility service. Thank you for your time and consideration.
