ICE Accountability

To: Rep. Bacon, Sen. Fischer, Sen. Ricketts

From: A verified voter in Omaha, NE

January 24

I am writing as your constituent deeply disturbed by the fatal federal shooting of a man in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026, involving an agent from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This incident, the third involving federal agents in Minneapolis in recent weeks, has raised serious questions about the use of force, transparency, and accountability in federal law enforcement operations. While law enforcement must be able to protect public safety, the video footage and eyewitness accounts of this incident depict a man wrestled to the ground, in a position of surrender, before multiple shots were fired. These images have alarmed citizens across the country and have contributed to protests and calls for justice. I urge you to support and advocate for the following: 1 A full, independent, and transparent investigation into this incident, separate from immediate internal reviews. 2 Mandatory body-worn cameras for all federal law enforcement officers engaged in domestic operations, with clear policies on footage release. 3 Strict standards and accountability mechanisms to govern the use of force by federal agents, including civilian oversight where appropriate. 4 Broader legislative action to ensure civil liberties and constitutional rights are protected during all federal enforcement activities. I believe these reforms are in the best interest of public safety and public trust. Nebraskans of all political backgrounds should be able to expect accountability and rule of law from federal agents acting on American soil. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your leadership on these critical issues.
