As a mother, I am deeply concerned about the potential consequences of HB 3, the proposed school choice legislation, on public education in Texas. While expanding educational options may benefit some families, the diversion of funds from traditional public schools will lead to detrimental consequences for the entire system. Public schools serve the vast majority of Texas students and play a crucial role in promoting equal opportunities and fostering diverse, inclusive learning environments. Redirecting resources away from these institutions risks exacerbating existing disparities and undermining the quality of education for those who remain in public schools. Furthermore, the accountability and oversight measures outlined in HB 3 will not be sufficient to ensure the responsible use of public funds by private entities. Without robust transparency and monitoring mechanisms, there is a risk of misuse or exploitation of taxpayer money intended for educational purposes. It is crucial to prioritize the strengthening and improvement of public education rather than pursing policies that could destabilize the system. Investing in quality teachers, updated resources, and equitable funding for all public schools should be the primary focus. Alternative educational options should complement, not undermine, the public education system that serves as the foundation for our state's future. I urge you to reject HB 3 and instead support measures that prioritize the needs of all Texas students by investing in and enhancing our public schools. Our children deserve access to high-quality education, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.
