I unequivocally oppose the actions and rhetoric of the Trump administration that suggest we are seeking to take over, annex, or otherwise claim sovereignty over any other country or territory against the will of its people. Recent statements regarding Greenland — implying that the United States “needs” to control foreign territory for national security reasons — are deeply troubling. Greenland as part of Denmark is a NATO ally. Any attempt to control the territory would effectively end NATO and dramatically weaken US national security.
I am also concerned that this rhetoric and recent military actions appear to be distraction politics — a way to dominate headlines while avoiding serious engagement with the release of the Epstein Files and Jack Smith’s Testimony stating Trump was in fact trying to overturn the election on January 6th 2021; not to mention rising inflation, unemployment, and economic insecurity. These are the matters that deserve attention, not legally impossible and diplomatically reckless territorial claims. How much longer will Congress enable his distractions while Americans suffer?
I expect Congress to exercise strong oversight and make clear that any further attempt to pursue territorial acquisition without the consent of the affected population is unacceptable.
Please publicly reaffirm your commitment to upholding for international laws and norms, reject further military aggression, prosecute those who break laws and defy congressional orders, and assert Congress’s constitutional role in matters of foreign policy and national security.
