I am writing to urge you to condemn the Trump administration's February 13, 2026 revocation of the 2009 Endangerment Finding and to introduce legislation that codifies the EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas industry. The 2009 Endangerment Finding was established following a 2007 Supreme Court ruling and represented the legal and scientific foundation for federal climate action. It concluded, based on rigorous scientific evidence, that greenhouse gases threaten human health and welfare. This finding gave the EPA legal authority under the Clean Air Act to regulate emissions from fossil fuel use, power plants, vehicles, and other major pollution sources. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin's repeal contradicts decades of peer-reviewed climate science. The justification for this action relied on a report commissioned from known climate science deniers that used cherry-picked data and false citations to reach predetermined conclusions. This is not legitimate policymaking. It is an ideological attack on established science that puts corporate interests ahead of public health. Without the Endangerment Finding, the EPA has no legal authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. This opens the door to widespread deregulation that will accelerate climate change and expose communities across the country to dangerous levels of pollution. The consequences will be measured in increased respiratory illnesses, extreme weather events, and economic damage to agriculture, infrastructure, and coastal communities. Climate change is real, and the scientific consensus is overwhelming. I am asking you to take two specific actions: publicly condemn this repeal and introduce or co-sponsor legislation that permanently establishes the EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. This authority should not depend on administrative findings that can be reversed with each change in administration. It must be codified into law. Your constituents deserve leadership that acknowledges scientific reality and protects public health over fossil fuel industry profits. I look forward to your response on this urgent matter.
