WHY IS AMERICA HELPING RUSSIA DEFEAT UKRAINE?

The world now sees the American commitment to democracy around the world. The 28-point “peace” plan president Trump is pressuring the Ukrainian president to sign before Thanksgiving. The plan seems to have been leaked to Axios by Kirill Dmitriev, a top ally of Putin. Reports say it was worked out by Dmitriev and Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff. Ukrainian and European representatives were not included. Our own Congress seems blindsided. Reporting also noted that, judging from the clunky translation, the plan appears to have been a direct Russian translation. It’s a Russian wish list. It starts with the same promise made to Ukrainian sovereignty in 1994 but broken by Russia in 2014. It gives Crimea and most of the formerly-Soviet territory in eastern Ukraine to Russia. It limits the size of the Ukrainian military. It gives full amnesty for Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilians, including well-documented rape, torture, and murder. It calls for $100B in frozen Russian assets to be invested in rebuilding and developing Ukraine. The regions that need reconstruction are the same ones Russia would be taking. The deal says that Europe, which was not consulted, will unfreeze Russian assets and itself add another $100B to the reconstruction fund. The plan says the US will receive “50% of the profits from this venture,” which appears to mean that Europe will foot the bill for the reconstruction of Ukraine (Russia, if the plan goes through) and the US and Russia will split the proceeds. The plan asserts that “Russia will be reintegrated into the global economy,” with sanctions lifted and an invitation to rejoin the G7, from which Russia was excluded when it invaded Ukraine in 2014. Russia and “[t]he US will enter into a long-term economic cooperation agreement for mutual development in the areas of energy, natural resources, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, data centres, rare earth metal extraction projects in the Arctic, and other mutually beneficial corporate opportunities.” Ukraine would be required to amend its constitution to reject future membership in NATO. It say’s “[a] dialogue will be held between Russia and NATO, mediated by the US, to resolve all security issues and create conditions for de-escalation to ensure global security and increase opportunities for cooperation and future economic development.” Not only does this agreement sell out Ukraine and Europe for the benefit of Russia, the invader of Ukraine, it explicitly separates the US from NATO, a long-time goal of Putin. This is a Russian plan put forth by the world’s strongest democracy, supported by an American president, designed to subjugate and swallow a country that has been fighting and dying for what our country also fought and died for. Do you support this plan? Will you follow the Kremlin’s wishes for Ukraine? Will you hand a democracy over to tyranny, just so we can make economic deals? Will you desert a democratic Ukraine?
