This proposed bill seeks to prohibit students assigned male at birth from participating on girls' interscholastic sports teams in California. However, policing students' gender identities and excluding transgender and non-binary youth from sports teams promotes discrimination. Trans kids deserve the same opportunities as their peers to learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and experience the benefits of athletics. There is no credible evidence that their participation threatens fairness or safety in youth sports. This misguided legislation ignores the complexity of gender and perpetuates harmful stereotypes. Every student should feel welcomed and included in school activities that enrich their lives, regardless of gender identity or expression. I urge you to reject this unnecessary and divisive proposal that would marginalize an already vulnerable group of young people.
