I am writing as a Texas resident to express my concern regarding any plans to construct a permanent border wall in the Big Bend region. I fully support effective and lawful border security. Keeping Texans safe is important, and I respect the work being done to address challenges along our border. However, the Big Bend region presents a unique situation where a permanent physical barrier is not the most effective or appropriate solution. Big Bend’s steep canyons, remote terrain, and the natural barrier created by the Rio Grande already limit access in ways that differ from other parts of the border. Because of this, modern approaches such as surveillance technology, targeted personnel deployment, and coordination with local, state, and federal agencies can provide strong security without permanently altering the landscape. Big Bend is one of Texas’s most treasured natural areas. It supports diverse wildlife, including species that rely on open migration routes across the region. A border wall would fragment habitats, disrupt wildlife movement, and cause lasting ecological damage in an area known for its conservation value. The region also plays an important role in Texas’s economy. Visitors from across the country come to experience Big Bend’s unique landscapes, supporting local communities and small businesses. A permanent wall would change the character of this region in ways that cannot be undone. Decisions made today will shape the future of this landscape for generations of Texans. Once altered, Big Bend cannot be restored to its original state. I respectfully urge you to consider alternatives that maintain strong border security while preserving the natural and cultural value of this region.
