Protect Our State from the Weaponization of NSPM-7

To: Rep. Roth, Gov. Whitmer, Sen. Bumstead

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

July 17

As your constituent, I am writing to demand immediate state-level action to protect our civil liberties from dangerous federal overreach. On July 16, 2026, federal officials at the State Department openly declared that law enforcement should ignore the civil liberties of domestic political dissenters. Under National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7), the federal government is actively seeking to "debank," defund, and criminalize peaceful progressive advocacy, environmental organizers, and civil rights groups under the label of "political terrorism." Truthout I refuse to let our state resources or local law enforcement be weaponized as tools of federal political persecution. I urge you to immediately: 1 Pass a "State-Level Civil Liberties Shield" prohibiting state and local police from cooperating with federal Joint Terrorism Task Forces (JTTFs) targeting political expression or peaceful protest. 2 Protect our financial sovereignty by banning state-chartered banks and credit unions from freezing customer accounts or "debanking" local advocacy groups based on political ideology without a state-issued court order. 3 Publicly declare our state a sanctuary for the First Amendment and constitutional rights. We need our state leaders to stand up and protect us. I look forward to hearing your plan to address this threat.
