Last Saturday, June 14, an estimated 11 million Americans, in all 50 states, peacefully demonstrated behind a simple message: “No Kings.”
There’s so much behind that two-word phrase. No Kings means…
• A desire to protect our Constitution, which boldly creates a Republic of, by, and for the people—not a playground for a monarch.
• A reverence for our Country’s history (recall that no less a figure than George Washington presciently resigned his office after two terms than serve as president for life).
• A plea for Congress to do its job as a coequal branch of government—to check and balance an out-of-control executive, protect those powers given to the legislature, and do the People’s business…not Donald Trump’s.
The motivations of those 11 million in the streets are perhaps best summed up by a protester quoted in the Dayton Daily News: “People are fed up.” Fed up with overreach from the White House. Fed up with blind partisanship while real people suffer. Fed up with lies, spin, and distortions of what we can clearly see happening before our eyes—on videotape, at the grocery store, in our neighborhoods.
I write in the hope that the No Kings movement will serve as a motivation for you to change your approach, to reassert Congress’s independence, and to rein in the chaos and corruption sown by the President. He is only filling the power vacuum you provided him. We the People are ready to get back to a more stable, more functional, and more democratic America, the America envisioned by our Constitution—the America where we have No Kings.
