I am writing as one of your constituents to urge you to oppose any federal law or regulation that mandates driver-monitoring systems, in-cabin cameras, biometric sensors, or any technology that continuously observes or analyzes drivers inside privately owned vehicles. I do not consent to being monitored simply because I choose to drive. My vehicle is not a government building or a public surveillance zone. It is my personal property, and I believe Americans should have the right to travel without being subjected to mandatory electronic observation. This issue matters deeply to me because I am already concerned about the direction surveillance technology is taking in our society. Whether we choose to participate in social media or not, our private lives have become increasingly exposed through the collection of personal data by connected devices, online services, smartphones, and other technologies. Instead of restoring privacy, we seem to be moving toward accepting constant monitoring as the price of participating in modern life. Investigative reporting has documented the existence of sophisticated commercial spyware capable of compromising personal devices, and advances in artificial intelligence continue to make it easier to analyze and connect enormous amounts of information. That reality makes me deeply uneasy about expanding mandatory data collection into our personal vehicles. I worry about the long-term consequences if information from vehicles, phones, biometric systems, and public camera networks is increasingly combined to create detailed records of ordinary Americans’ daily lives. Even if the stated purpose of these technologies is public safety, history has shown that surveillance systems often expand beyond their original intent. Once the infrastructure exists, it becomes increasingly difficult to limit who can access the data, how it may be used, and whether future policymakers will broaden its scope. I do not believe this is what it means to protect your constituents. Protecting Americans should mean defending both our physical safety and our constitutional liberties. Privacy is not a luxury, nor is it something citizens should have to surrender simply to drive to work, visit family, attend church, receive medical care, or participate in everyday life. If consumers wish to purchase vehicles with driver-monitoring technology, that should remain a personal choice. It should not become a federal requirement imposed on every American. I respectfully ask you to oppose any legislation or regulation that mandates driver-monitoring systems in privately owned vehicles and to support stronger protections for Americans’ privacy, data ownership, and constitutional rights.
