An Open Letter

To: Rep. Barr, Sen. Paul, Sen. McConnell

From: A constituent in Paris, KY

September 2, 2025

On September 12, 2025, the Department of Energy's (DOE) rule requiring buildings receiving federal funds to be accessible under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act will take effect. This date marks the effectiveness of the DOE's decision to rescind accessibility requirements for new construction and renovations of buildings receiving DOE funds, deeming them "unnecessary and too burdensome". The change was initially set to take effect in July but was postponed until September due to strong public and advocacy opposition. I would like it to be known that overturning this act would be catastrophic for the disabled community. As a community that already doesn't receive the help that we need, do NOT overturn what little benefits and protections we do get. Anyone can become disabled at anytime. Save 10 C.F.R. § 1040.73!!!
