Do not let Trump think he can “destroy” rather than work together.

To: Sen. Lankford, Sen. Mullin, Rep. Cole

February 23

I am writing to express my deep concern about recent public statements and policy rhetoric from former President Donald Trump regarding international tariffs, trade policy, and comments suggesting the ability to “destroy” other countries through economic measures. These remarks were made following a U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down a broad tariff authority used by the former president. While I understand that trade policy and economic strategy are important levers for U.S. leadership, I am alarmed by language that appears to endorse the use of extreme economic coercion and that could be interpreted — domestically and abroad — as a threat to other nations’ stability. I believe that such rhetoric is harmful to America’s global reputation, undermines diplomatic relationships, and increases economic uncertainty for U.S. businesses and consumers. Tariffs and trade actions have direct impacts on international relations, and they can also raise prices for American families and disrupt supply chains. Many economists agree that broad, escalating tariffs often hurt U.S. consumers and exporters more than they help. (Research has shown tariffs act as taxes on imports that are frequently passed on to Americans in the form of higher prices.) Moreover, remarks suggesting the power to “destroy” another country — even metaphorically — set a concerning tone. I hope that our nation’s leaders approach trade policy with strategic judgment, restraint, and in consultation with Congress, as our Constitution assigns tariff and trade authority primarily to the legislative branch. I urge you to: 1. Support policies that ensure trade measures are transparent, lawful, and guided by legislative oversight, not unilateral executive action. 2. Promote diplomatic engagement with allies and trading partners to resolve trade disagreements without threatening economic devastation. 3. Encourage responsible rhetoric from national leaders that reflects American values of cooperation, stability, and respect for international partners. Thank you for representing the people of Oklahoma. I appreciate your attention to this important matter and welcome your perspective on how Congress can safeguard sound trade policy and prevent escalatory rhetoric that could harm America’s interests.
