Reject White House AI Proposal and Protect Creative Workers

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Davidson

March 23

I need you to oppose the White House AI legislative recommendations sent to Congress and work to establish real accountability for AI systems harming workers and artists. The recent cancellation of author Mia Ballard's book contract shows what happens without safeguards. Hachette pulled her novel after an AI detection tool flagged it as 78% AI-generated, destroying her career within 24 hours. The detection report was built on a pirated PDF, not her actual manuscript. Research from Stanford and Nature shows these tools carry significant bias against non-native English speakers and African American English, with bias levels exceeding any experimentally recorded human stereotypes. Ballard is a Black woman in an industry with documented equity problems. The White House proposal would ensure no accountability for situations like this. It declares that training AI on copyrighted material doesn't violate copyright law, recommends against creating any federal AI regulatory body, and includes preemption provisions blocking states from regulating AI development. This means no institution could be held responsible when flawed AI tools destroy livelihoods. We regulate aviation through the FAA and pharmaceuticals through the FDA because the stakes are too high to leave unmonitored. Creative labor and economic security deserve the same protection. Support federal AI oversight with enforcement power and reject any preemption provisions that strip states of regulatory authority.
