The SAVE Act attempts to impose strict citizenship documentation requirements for voter registration that could disenfranchise many eligible voters, particularly those from marginalized communities. Federal law already requires voters to affirm their citizenship under penalty of perjury when registering. Additional restrictive proof-of-citizenship rules risk creating unnecessary barriers to the fundamental right to vote. This legislation fails to adequately safeguard the integrity of elections while making it harder for millions of citizens to exercise their constitutional rights. Onerous documentary requirements raise concerns over voter suppression and undermine principles of free and fair access to the democratic process. Rather than erecting obstacles, Congress should work to expand voting access and boost civic participation across all groups. Protecting the freedom to vote for all eligible citizens strengthens American democracy. I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and any measures that arbitrarily limit the ability of citizens to register and vote.
