Pass legislation that restricts private companies from acquiring or replacing core government functions. What we are seeing — corporations positioning themselves to take over public services, regulatory bodies, and civic infrastructure for profit — is a direct threat to democratic accountability. Government exists to serve the public, not to generate returns for shareholders.
When a for-profit company runs what used to be a public function, the incentive shifts from serving constituents to maximizing revenue. That means higher costs, reduced access, and zero accountability to voters. No CEO answers to the people. No board of directors can be voted out. Once these functions are privatized, getting them back is nearly impossible.
This is not about being anti-business. It is about protecting the boundary between commerce and governance. I want you to introduce or co-sponsor legislation that explicitly prohibits corporations from contracting to replace — not just supplement — essential government operations, and that creates enforceable penalties for attempts to do so.
